The duchy of Schleswig constituted a Danish fief, while the Duchy of Holstein remained a part of the German Confederation. شكلت دوقية شليسفيغ إقطاعة دانمركية، في حين ظلت دوقية هولشتاين جزءا من الاتحاد الألماني.
Schleswig itself was a fiefdom of Denmark, as the duchy of Holstein had been a fief of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806, and become a component state of the German Confederation with the Danish king as duke. شليسفيغ ذاتها كانت إقطاعة دنماركية، ودوقية هولشتاين كانت إقطاعة في الإمبراطورية الرومانية المقدسة حتى عام 1806 م، وصارت دولة مكونة للاتحاد الألماني مع الملك الدنماركي كدوق.
Like the First Schleswig War (1848–51), it was fought for control of the duchies because of succession disputes concerning the duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg when the Danish king died without an heir acceptable to the German Confederation. وكحال حرب شلسفيغ الأولى (1848-1851) خيضت هذه الحرب من أجل السيطرة على الدوقيات إثر نشوء نزاع على خلافة دوقيتي هولشتاين ولاونبورغ حين الملك الدنماركي دون وريث مقبول لدى الاتحاد الألماني.
